Through this seminar we would like to review the latest in matter of research on the subject of judicial pacifism, attempts at peaceful resolution to conflicts through arbitration, development of international law, attempts, be it on a political level (Hague Conference, Inter- Parliamentary Union), or on that of peaceful societies (peace societies, permanent International Peace Bureau), or non-governmental organizations and initiatives (Nobel Peace Prize, Carnegie Foundation, etc). It would also aim to pursue research dedicated to people active in the Second International and to ideas and peace initiatives of militants and leaders of the working class. This would include some new actors: trade unionists, women, rebels, conscientious objectors and some important even though fruitless attempts at peace (Stockholm Conference, calls for peace from Benedict XV etc). Placing the emphasis on the actors (individually or collectively) we would like to integrate a certain number of perspectives and new approaches of historic research: for example individual itineraries, networks, cultural representations and initiatives, forms of resistance to dominating intellectual currents and powers, controversies with denigrators of pacifism, disagreements within the peace-building camp, or the affective dimension of the cause of peace.
The suggested range of topics includes (but is not limited to the following):
1. Men and women advocates of peace (this section could portray influential actors, militants, or offer prosopographical approaches …)
- Places and networks of the defense of peace (peaceful societies, International Peace Bureau, international conferences, Inter-Parliamentary Union, foundations, prizes, reviews, pamphlets …)
- Attempts at peace and demonstrations of peace (conferences, peace initiatives, pacifist organizations …)
- Governments and advocates of peace (supports, uses, marginalization, tolerance, repression …)
- Conceptions, representations, controversies (arguments for peace; economic, social, political, cultural, moral, religious views, ideological theories …)
- Peace wishes (purpose of peace, expression, feelings …)
Papers can deal with the whole period or with a part or with a specific time. Perspectives on subjects as influence or the failure of the advocates of peace or 1917 will be central themes.

Expenses
Speaker’s travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the conference organizers. Further details will be sent out to the speakers in June 2013.
