What we do | Nos activites

Since our members are spread around the globe, the main way in which we keep in touch is via this website and our email discussion list. Through the list, our members share information about forthcoming events and recent publications, we discuss ideas, and ask each other for help with research queries.

Once every two years (or thereabouts), we have held a conference. Our conferences are friendly and jam-packed with new research. The various organisers of these conferences have tended to circulate the papers to participants in advance, relying on discussants to summarise and comment on the papers, so that the maximum amount of time can be devoted to discussing the papers with their authors. For the most part, the authors who have presented their work have been postgraduates or postdocs, whilst discussants have tended to be more established members of the academic community. But anyone with new research to share is welcome! To date we have held conferences in Lyons, Oxford, Dublin, Washington DC and London.

Arising from these conferences have been edited volumes which have incorporated a selection of the papers presented.

The society’s latest venture is the launch of a new journal, First World War Studies, published by Taylor and Francis.
