‘Other Combatants, Other Fronts: Competing Histories of the First World War’
The 5th Conference of the International Society for First World War Studies

We would like to call your attention to the Fifth Conference of the International Society for First World War Studies, which will take place in association with the Imperial War Museum and War Studies, King’s College, London in September 2009. Since 2001, the International Society for First World War Studies has held successful conferences in Lyon, Oxford, Dublin and Washington DC.
In line with previous conferences the Society seeks emerging and innovative research on all aspects of the First World War. We would encourage applications from a variety of disciplines, including literature, art, archaeology, philosophy and music, as well as from historians.
The historiography of the Western Front from the British, French and German perspectives is well developed. Whilst we welcome the latest research in these veins the conference seeks to juxtapose it with work emphasising less familiar ‘fronts’ – ‘Other Combatants’ and ‘Other Fronts’. In so doing we will expand and enhance our understanding of the truly global nature of this conflict. As with all the Society’s previous conferences a publication based on conference papers is anticipated.
Please send abstracts of no more than 500 words, accompanied by a one page CV by 31 January 2009. Following the Society’s commitment to promote the work of young scholars, we are particularly keen to receive proposals from PhD candidates, post-doctoral students and early career researchers. Please be prepared to submit a paper of no more than 8000 words by 1 June 2009. Please note that we welcome papers written in French and German, but ask that the author provide a 1000 word summary in English in addition to their original draft. All papers will be pre-circulated.
The Society brings together over 200 members from all over the world to enhance the public understanding of the First World War. In the egalitarian spirit of the Society we aim to foster cross-disciplinary exchange and debate between international postgraduate and postdoctoral scholars, along with established senior academics. Nous voudrions attirer votre attention sur le 5e Colloque de la Société Internationale d’Etude de la Grande Guerre, qui se tiendra en septembre 2009 à Londres en association avec The Imperial War Museum et War Studies, King’s College. Depuis 2001, cette Société a organisé avec succès des colloques à Lyon, Oxford, Dublin et Washington DC.
En accord avec nos colloques précédents, la Société sollicite des articles inédits et novateurs sur tous les aspects de la Grande Guerre. Nous invitons les chercheurs de toutes les disciplines ; littérature, art, archéologie, philosophie, musique, ainsi que l’histoire, à nous soumettre des propositions. Comme dans les précédents colloques, la publication d’un livre fondée sur les communications retenues pour le colloque est prévue.
Les propositions de moins de 500 mots, doivent nous parvenir, accompagnées d’un court CV (1 page) avant le 30 janvier 2009. La Société encourageant la recherche des jeunes universitaires, nous invitons tous les jeunes chercheurs doctorants et post-doctorants à nous envoyer des propositions. Les candidats sélectionnés devront soumettre leur communication, ne devant pas dépasser 8000 mots, avant le 1er juin 2009. Nous acceptons les propositions en anglais, français et allemand, mais la langue officielle du colloque étant l’anglais, les articles rédigés en français et allemand devront être accompagnées d’un résumé de 1000 mots en anglais. Les communications seront distribuées avant le colloque.
La Société rassemble plus de 200 membres dans le monde entier oeuvrant pour améliorer la compréhension de la Grande Guerre. Selon l’esprit égalitaire de la Société nous visons à encourager un échange et un débat interdisciplinaire entre jeunes chercheurs doctorants et universitaires confirmés.

Wir möchten Sie auf die Fünfte Konferenz der Internationalen Gesellschaft für Studien zum Ersten Weltkrieges aufmerksam machen, die in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Imperial War Museum und War Studies, King’s College London im September 2009 stattfinden wird. Seit 2001 hat die Internationale Gesellschaft für Studien zum Ersten Weltkrieges erfolgreiche Konferenzen in Lyon, Oxford, Dublin und Washington ausgerichtet.
Wie für die vorangehenden Konferenzen sucht die Gesellschaft nach innovativen Forschungsthemen zu allen Gesichtspunkten des Ersten Weltkrieges. Wir begrüßen abstracts aus diversen Fachrichtungen, einschließlich der Literaturwissenschaft, der Kunstwissenschaft, der Archäologie, der Philosophie und der Musikwissenschaft, sowie natürlich den Geschichtswissenschaften. Wie bei den bisherigen Konferenzen strebt die Gesellschaft eine Publikation auf Basis der Vorträge an.
Bitte schicken Sie uns Ihren abstract von maximal 500 Worten sowie einen Lebenslauf bis zum 31. Januar 2009. Da die Gesellschaft die Arbeit junger Wissenschaftler/innen unterstützt, wenden wir uns insbesondere an Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden und an Forscher, die am Anfang ihrer Karriere stehen. Bitte bereiten Sie sich darauf vor, bis zum 1. Juni 2009, einen Vortrag von maximal 8000 Wörtern einzureichen. Vorträge in französischer und deutscher Sprache sind willkommen, allerdings bitten wir Sie, uns in diesem Fall ebenfalls eine englischsprachige Zusammenfassung Ihres Vortrages von 1000 Worten zukommen zu lassen. Alle Vorträge werden vor der Konferenz unter den Teilnehmern verteilt.
Die Gesellschaft versammelt über 200 Mitglieder aus aller Welt, um das allgemeine Verständnis des Ersten Weltkrieges zu erweitern. Durch den egalitären Geist der Gesellschaft möchten wir einen interdisziplinären Dialog zwischen internationalen Doktoranden, jungen Forschern und etablierteren Wissenschaftler/innen förden.
