This small conference aimed to place postgraduates and postdocs at the centre of proceedings. It was organised on a wing and a prayer, with some generous support from the IEP in Lyon and King’s College, London. A number of more senior academics were kind enough to join us and to add their knowledge to our proceedings. The conference was friendly and fruitful, and afterwards we decided to stay in touch with the participants. These are the origins of the International Society for First World War Studies.
